Sugar Land, TX — Today Sri Preston Kulkarni’s campaign announced a record-breaking second quarter haul of $950,000, expanding Kulkarni’s war chest to more than $1.1 million and firmly establishing him as the frontrunner in Texas’s 22nd Congressional District as the nation’s nastiest GOP primary nears its bitter end.
Kulkarni’s massive quarter breaks the record for the most money ever raised in a quarter for this district, surpassing the previous record set by Tom Delay as House Majority Leader. The total comes after the campaign suspended all in-person events due to the coronavirus crisis and continues its pledge to reject all corporate PAC money to get big money out of politics.
The raise puts Kulkarni in an extremely strong position heading into the general election, where he will face either extreme GOP megadonor Kathaleen Wall, who has yet to prove whether she can transform $14 million of her own money into a simple majority or fired cop Troy Nehls, whose meager pre-runoff “haul” of $108,000 was outraised by the Kulkarni campaign in a single day this quarter.
This brings Kulkarni’s total raise for the cycle to more than $2.4 million, far outpacing the $1.6 million Kulkarni raised in 2018 and even surpassing the $1.9 million Pete Olson spent to eke out a win.
Kulkarni’s campaign has earned attention and praise as one of the most innovative grassroots efforts in the country, reaching Texans in 21 different languages and registering more than 40,000 new voters by engaging the previously ignored communities that make TX-22 the most diverse congressional district in the country.
Kulkarni’s Q2 by the numbers:
- Q2 raised: $950,000
- Cash on hand: $1.1 million
- Cycle raised: $2.4 million
- Total raised in 2018: $1.6 million
- Corporate PAC money: $0
Sri 2020 campaign manager Allen Chen issued the following statement:
“This record-breaking haul shows voters are responding to Sri’s message of compassion and reason in contrast to the two reckless extremists left standing in the Republican primary.
“Texas’ 22nd District is not for sale, and it won’t be bought by shady super PACs, special interests or multi-millionaires trying to purchase a seat. Sri isn’t even on Tuesday’s ballot and our campaign is generating more enthusiasm than either of Sri’s two scandal-ridden opponents who are less than a week out from their election.
“Our strong fundraising means Sri will be able to share his message of fighting for quality, affordable health care and breaking the partisan gridlock in Washington regardless of which extremist candidate is nominated. We are building a movement and this is only the beginning for us.
